The Huascaran landslide refers to a catastrophic event that occurred in Peru on May 31, 1970. It was triggered by a magnitude 7.9 earthquake that caused a massive ice and rock avalanche on Mount Huascaran, the highest peak in Peru. The landslide buried the towns of Yungay and Ranrahirca, resulting in the deaths of thousands of people. It is considered one of the deadliest landslides in history.
